10 Unique Adventures in Alaska

While this is not a full list, here are some of the most unique adventures you can have in Alaska!

Go on a Helicopter Tour

A helicopter tour is as Alaskan as it gets. There are a bunch of different types of tours you can go on. My fave is taking a tour with Outbound Heli out of Palmer. They have multiple tour lengths with different amounts of landing depending on the adventure you want to have. You can even add on glacier lake paddle boarding or ice climbing!

Try Dog Sledding

Alaska is well known for the Iditarod race where dogs and their mushers travel all the way from Anchorage to Nome. You can get a taste of dog sledding on a glacier in the summer or in the winter! Dog sledding is typically accessible via helicopter and can be reached out of Girdwood or Palmer.

Go Trekking Ice Climbing on a Glacier

The best way to see a glacier is by traveling on it! You can opt to hike on a glacier or even try ice climbing. The most accessible glacier is the Matanuska Glacier. I’m biased, my partner is an ice climbing guide, but I really recommend a tour with NOVA Alaska Guides for one of the most unique experiences you can have.

Helicopter Paddle Boarding

This is one of those adventures you can add onto a helicopter tour with Outbound – you can opt to add on paddling in an iceberg lake or in a glacier blue pool! Don a dry suit and explore a pretty rad location via paddle board.

Fishing Charter

Are you big into fishing or do you wanna catch Alaskan salmon for yourself? Go on a fishing charter! Depending on your location and charter you choose you can catch different fish.

If you wan a go deep sea fishing check out the charters in Seward from Miller’s Landing. Salmon fishing is season. Check out a range of charters depending on your location.

River Rafting

Alaska has some of the most wild rivers you can ride. Check out NOVAs rafting experiences along the Matanuska River in Glacier View (and hike on the glacier after!) or go on an epic adventure with them over in Hope.

The Chugach River is another incredible rafting adventure. Check out this package that includes a heli ride, glacier travel, a train ride, and rafting – this trip highlights all the good stuff in Alaska!

Ride the Train

The Alaska Railroad connects much of Alaska and is one of the most scenic ways to travel the state. Head south to Seward and see Girdwood and glaciers along the way – perfect for if you are hopping on a cruise out of Seward!

You can also ride up to Talkeetnah, Denali, and Fairbanks!

See Denali from a Floatplane

It’s no secret that Denali is the tallest mountain in all of the US, and a big draw for coming to Alaska. You can drive up and see the mountain on the horizon – heck you can even see it from Anchorage on a clear day!

Apart from exploring the National Park, chartering a float plane and landing on the Ruth Glacier may just be one of the most epic ways to see Denali.

Sea Kayaking Tours

Sea Kayaking is a fun way to get some exercise in, see wildlife, and visit glaciers and icebergs! You can kayak from a few different locations. My favorites include Seward and Valdez.

Day Cruises

Want a unique way to see glaciers, widlife, and the mountains that rise from the ocean? I day cruise in Seward will leave you wanting more adventure! Some of my favorites include this Resurrection Bay tour with lunch on Fox Island or charter a Sailboat to see whales and wildlife! If you want a more personal wildlife tour check out this charter for up to 6 guests.

Any adventure you go on in Alaska will be worthwhile. Get in touch if you wanna have your day captured and your love story told!
